mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on obama. >> steve, thank you very much for your time. >> good to be here. >> steve, what do you think about this idea that debates don't usually change the race entirely all by themselves, but they confirm the narrative that has already been going on in the country? >> well, they can confirm the narrative but we keep coming

romney is a good debator. i'm just okay. but what i'm most concerned about is having a serious discussion about what we need to do to keep the country growing and restore security for hard-working americans. that's what people are going to be listening for. that's the debate that you deserve. >> a new national washington post poll of likely voters shows president obama polling at 49% and mitt romney at 47% but among likely voters in the swing states, president obama leads mitt romney by 11 points. 52%-41%. tonight the forecast is president obama will within 320 electoral college votes. joining me now is steve and karen. karen, the expectation game has gotten really out of hand this time. finally chris christie, for whatever reason, just kind of gave up and stated the obvious and said well, of course. you know, mitt romney has to be the big winner on this first debate. >> well, i think he was like look, let me keep my credibility in check because he's been watching what has happened to congressman ryan over the

huffington "post" obviously has a left bent, but it was declaring romney won the debate. ken duberstein will join us, as well. >> i was reading some of your tweets last night, john, and i liked your tweet. i tell you what i took away from the entire debate because i want to let you say it, but i saw what's possible in a life spent without any alcohol. i saw what i could have possibly been -- i saw how i could have possibly been able to talk if i had all the brain cells that i started with. and that was what i came away with. that i just wish in a maybe i had considered that path maybe of being, you negotiation life of sobriety. anyway, what did you think, john? >> well, romney considered that path and he took that path, joe, and he tried to press his case last night. the challenge for him was to come out with the kind of aggression that could score for him while still being respectful for the president. and i think he met that challenge. he was on offense most of the time, put the president back on his heels on his record. and he challenged him directly. i thought the str

for mitt romney a very different mitt romney. that's what we saw in this debate. mitt romney most of the time his hands are down at his sides. he used gestured to get his point across and the use of emblems to bring home a he message. check please. if he had three points, he'd say one, two, three and lay it out for us. very active and aggressive and pushing his agenda forward. the president on the other hand when we saw that foot up, we call that a sprinter's pose. he's ready to go and move toward forward. it's off balance and out of sorts. we saw that from the president through his debate. >> chris, the looking down for obama. i mean, it's well established at this point that they used the split screen shot for presidential debates. you're always on the camera, and he has romney tearing into him cart clai articulately, and obama looks like a defeated man. >> we're talking about body language. itself it means nothing but the perception means nothing. in that position where his head is down, he's writing down notes. he did it a lot, looking down occasionally or to j
